CHARITY CARE – NETWORK

Purpose: Helps pay for healthcare for people who can’t afford the care they need.

Furthering Our Mission: Charity Care is at the heart of Ascension Seton’s mission to care for the poor and vulnerable.

Patient Story: Mark is a homeless man in Austin and, on most days, you can find him standing on his corner. Being exposed to the elements has taken a toll on Mark’s health. He has several chronic health conditions that periodically require attention in an Emergency Room. He has been to several in our area. He recently shared that in his experience, the homeless are often treated as “invisible” as though they don’t exist. He is quick to point out though, that at Ascension Seton hospitals, he feels not only taken care of in the medical sense, but also cared about and cared for as a person. As Mark says, at Ascension Seton he feels a sense of dignity, that he is important, and that he matters.

Stories:

– A 10-year-old boy sustained burns to his upper body during a kitchen accident. Due to heavy scarring, he required a specialized compression garment to move forward with treatment and needed surgery.  The family was not able to afford this unexpected medical expense, but the Family Fund provided the necessary vests (cost of $1540.00).

– Patient’s families often arrive at the Dell Children’s unexpectedly. Sadly, some do not have food or money for food. Food Pantries, supported by the Family Fund, provide microwave meals, protein bars, snack mix, breakfast items, and more on every unit for any family that needs it.
